LOS ANGELES — Romantic tearjerker "Dear John" overcame dismal reviews to end the seven-week reign of "Avatar" at the top of the North American box office this weekend, final figures showed Monday.
The film, an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel about a soldier who falls in love with a college student, stormed to an impressive 30.5 million dollars on its debut, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
The movie, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, has received largely negative reviews but proved too strong for science-fiction epic "Avatar," the highest-grossing film in history with more than two billion dollars worldwide.
